VET students reflect on the future through the documentary “Utopia Revisited”

As part of the initiative to develop green and digital skills among vocational education students, the Center for Competitive Skills (CCS) is organizing an awareness and educational activity on Friday, September 26, with students from the vocational schools “Gjergji Canco” in Tirana and “Mihal Shahini” in Cërrik.

The activity includes open discussions with youth on current social and environmental challenges, focusing on topics such as social justice, conscious consumption, alternative economies, and the role of individuals in building a more sustainable society. Students are expected to actively engage in reflection and idea exchange on these themes, preparing the ground for the second part of the activity: the screening of the documentary “Utopia Revisited.”

This documentary, directed by Kurt Langbein, takes viewers on a journey through real-world initiatives around the globe, where ordinary people have created new models of coexistence and development that challenge the traditional economic system. Through examples from Germany, South Korea, Switzerland, Argentina, and the Congo, the film offers a fresh perspective on alternative ways of living, based on collaboration, self-management, and environmental sustainability.

At the heart of the film are inspiring stories such as that of Petra Wähning, who supports community-supported agriculture in Germany, or the Hansalim cooperative in South Korea, which supplies millions of people with organic products while also supporting local farmers. In Switzerland, residents of an experimental urban complex significantly reduce energy consumption, while in Argentina, workers take over the management of a tea factory through self-management.

“Utopia Revisited” is not just a reflection on today’s reality, but an invitation to think and act differently. The film raises essential questions about the direction global society is taking and offers concrete examples of alternative paths that are already being implemented in various parts of the world.

Through this activity, CCS aims to create spaces for critical education, social awareness, and active youth engagement in topics that have a direct impact on their future. Vocational education students are not just recipients of technical knowledge—they are young citizens with the potential to lead change toward a more just, equitable, and sustainable world.
